Rushnyk or rushnik is a decorative and ritual cloth. Made of linen or cotton it usually represents woven or embroidered designs, symbols and cryptograms of the ancient world. They have been used in sacred Eastern Slavic rituals, religious services and ceremonial events such as weddings and funerals. Each region has its own designs and patterns with hidden meaning, passed down from generation to generation.

The series is included in the MOTHERLAND IS CALLING project that researches eastern European ‘mother vs. motherland’ phenomenon and their usage by propaganda. Songs of Motherland is based on the postcard series from 1987th USSR, that illustrate soviet patriotic songs. The original illustrations by V.I.Mironov are based on the Palekh miniature style. Palekh is a Russian folk handicraft based on a local history of icon painting.

The very first experiments with “motherland” — multiple plates etchings.

Both prints are based on monuments. The first one is based on sculptures of soldiers from the “Motherland is calling” monumental ensemble in Volgograd (RU). The second print is picturing two heads of Motherland sculptures: Russian one (from Volgograd) and Ukrainian one (from Kiev).
